Dedicated to Giovanni Martinelli, leading tenor of the Metropolitan Opera House, New York.

Over the fields of the desert
Swift in the darkness I ride,
Fleet are the feet of my charger,
Bringing me safe to thy side.
Swiftly the dew-scented evening,
Falls where the tamarisk grows;
Breezy flutes float thru the palm trees,
Chanting thy praise as they blow
Come to me love in the moonlight,
Pity my pleadings and sighs;
Give me thy lips with their fragrance,
Let me drink dreams from thine eyes.
Rich are the gifts that I bring thee,
Diamonds and sapphires and gold,
Myrrh and the perfume of amber,
Incense thy form to enfold.
Open thy window and hear me,
Bid me no more to depart,
Here let me hold thee forever,
Safe in the shrine of my heart.
