Notes There are covers for each of the major productions of this show.
1. The Broadway production opened on Nov, 30, 1926, and ran for 465 performances.
2. In 1929 Warner Bros. filmed the operetta, keeping the origianl text and its ‘adult themes.' Some of the sequences were filmed in Technicolor, but these have not survived. The film did not comply with the later Production Code and was withdrawn.
3. In 1943 Warner Bros. remade the film as part of the war effort, changing the enemy from the French to the Nazis and renaming the Red Shadow El Khobar. The plot was twisted around, moving the venue from North Africa to Marseilles and making the lyrics code messages intended for the French Underground.
4. In 1953 the plot was adapted for peace time, with the General Birabeau becoming the father of the heroine instead of El Khobar and the hero becoming a Latin teacher, not a rebel leader.
